The Affordable Energy Coalition has filed its opening statement with the Nova Scotia Energy Board in Nova Scotia Power’s 2026–2027 General Rate Application hearing.
The statement highlights Nova Scotia’s high rate of energy poverty, with 43% of households spending more than 6% of their income on energy, and raises four key concerns: affordability for low- and modest-income households, excessive utility profits, the need to centre equity in the transition to zero-carbon energy, and the importance of technology-neutral planning to minimize costs.
The Coalition calls for stronger protections for low-income customers, including consideration of a made-in-Nova-Scotia Home Energy Affordability Program, scrutiny of Nova Scotia Power’s proposed return on equity, and increased investment in energy efficiency to reduce bills over the long term.
